Johnny Depp fits perfectly into Tim Burton's kid-friendly world of whimsy.

Margaret Cho: Assassin

Everything's a niche brand these days, so why not standup comedians? In a country where people talk only to people who already agree with them, there's almost no difference between comics and political commentators anyway. Exhibit A: Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly. Okay, one's intentionally funny. Try Margaret Cho and Ann Coulter--both proud of their outrageousness, both self-styled political bomb-throwers, both rabid turn-ons for their rabid fans.

In this DVD of a Cho show in Washington, D.C., her fans scream and cheer every innocuous line out of her mouth. Meanwhile, she sees herself not as a hip camp counselor but as a radical insurrectionist, who chose her tour's title to "make the right wing just kinda go crazy." If the right wing cared half as much about Cho as the left wing does about Coulter, O'Reilly and Limbaugh, we'd be (sigh) living in a very different country.

Cho's delusions of political grandeur aside, she's hit-and-miss funny, riffing on Reagan's death, the pope's sexuality, her mom's loopiness, the unfairness visited on Martha Stewart, and of course the hypocrisy of religious fundamentalists and the venality of George W. Bush. Like Whoopi Goldberg, she's strongest when she's acting, mimicking people's voices and body language with her own expressive head fakes and gymnastics. Her audience loves her, and maybe you're one of them, but is this a DVD anyone would watch more than once? B-
