Maryann Tancredi
Occupation: Loan portfolio assistant.
Neighborhood: Fishtown.
Style: 1,200-square-foot row home.

While it may be true that you can never have enough money or friends, Philadelphians have a seemingly unquenchable thirst for storage space. And at Maryann Tancredi and her partner Nicki's home in Fishtown, there's ample space for just about everything.

Where did you live before?
"I lived in Old City."

When you went to buy a house, did you look in Old City?
"No. I knew that was out of my price range. I started off searching in Bella Vista and Northern Liberties, and realized that those were too expensive as well. I work for a nonprofit that does community development, so I knew the upcoming neighborhoods, which led me to Fishtown. When I looked at this place I immediately liked that the living room was larger than in most row homes. Also with the high ceilings it feels really big, not at all cramped like a lot of places. And since I really like to cook, I fell in love with the kitchen. It has a stove in the middle of the room that makes it easy for two people to cook at the same time. The one drawback was that the entire place was covered in pink carpet and flowered wallpaper."

I can see you fixed that.
"Yeah. Structurally, the house was in great shape, but cosmetically, it needed work. I never knew people put wallpaper on the ceiling, but that's what they'd done here. I was going to school at the time, so while I got rid of the wallpaper right away, I had to live with the carpet for a while."

Your new wood floors are
gorgeous.

"A friend of the family puts in hardwood floors, so I got a good deal."

I love your dining room table.
"That's actually the dining room table I ate around with my family as a child. The hutch also came from my parents. I just dressed it up a little with new knobs."

How many rooms do you have?
"We have the master bedroom, an office and a full finished basement. And one full bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub. That and the second-floor laundry were big selling points. The bathroom also has a huge closet for towels and stuff. I put in a new light fixture, but eventually I want to redo it in a more contemporary look."

Do you use your backyard much?
"Nicki is out there every weekend lying in the kiddie pool. Our dog Chloe lies in the lounge chair next to her. I cook on the grill out there. It's nice having an outside spot."

Besides the price, is there anything else that attracted you to Fishtown?
"I've been amazed by how friendly the people can be. I walk out of my house in the morning, and everyone waves hello, and they're always right there ready to help out with whatever you need. People here are just really open and nice. It's like a family atmosphere."
