Gardens are topping a growing number of Philly homes.
That's good news for anyone considering having a green roof retrofitted to an existing structure. But the initial cost of installation will still require good bit of cash.
According to Howard Steinberg, green roofs on new buildings cost about $20 per square foot (about $10 to $12 more than an ordinary roof). Installing a green roof on top of an old one can run you considerably more, depending the state of the existing rooftop. But the return on the investment is "significant" for the seller, he stresses.
And McDonald-whose company now plans to only build green-roofed structures-says there's already plenty of demand.
