This was the scene in the 1600 block of Walnut this morning -- block closed off, police on the scene, parts of a building in the middle of the street.
A friendly police officer said a sign on the former Brasserie Perrier building at 1619 Walnut had fallen to the street in the early morning hours, taking out some windows across the street. "If that had come down around noon, we might've lost some people, with that weight coming down," the officer told me.
He said Licensing & Inspections is bringing in a crane to better examine the remains of the building's facade. In the meantime, the block -- a busy westbound thoroughfare -- is closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
