Metro reports that an investigation into violence against Asian students at South Philadelphia High has recommended hoodies be banned in city schools: "The report says that race and ethnicity “were contributing factors” in the violence against Asian students in school, but that they were triggered by rumors about a fight off school grounds on Dec. 2 between rival gangs of black and Asian students.
The district has since added cameras and more school police, but Superintendent Arlene Ackerman said she also supports outlawing hooded sweatshirts, which help shield students’ identities. Some advocates said the report didn’t go far enough. “We’re very deeply troubled by significant discrepancies, and in some cases inaccuracies, between what a number of students and other witnesses told us transpired on that day and what the findings of the report found,” said Helen Gym of Asian Americans United."
