Philly Sports Chat discusses today's story that Cliff Lee wanted to end his career with the Phillies -- and was surprised by the trade for Roy Halladay:
In interview with ESPN, he says that he was shocked and in disbelief about the trade away from Philly and the announcements that he wouldn’t sign a long-term deal because he wanted to test the market, “couldn’t be further from the truth”. In fact, he even says he hates hearing that from the Phillies because in his mind, he wanted to be here for a while and even finish his career in Philadelphia. The man LOVED it here.
This throws a wrench in the Phillies’ story. If Cliff Lee isn’t making this stuff up, then the Phillies fans were lied to so the trade would be welcomed. It could be that the Phillies had been after Halladay for so long that they just wanted to get him once and for all but needed a story to help the fans accept them sending Cliff Lee away. Many fans still aren’t over his departure and this story could make it even harder for them to accept. There’s no doubt in my mind that Halladay will be just as good but seeing this interview makes me hope the Phillies weren’t hiding something from us.
