The three most important things to know in Philadelphia today:

PHILLIES BEAT DODGERS IN NINTH-INNING RALLY: ESPN's Jayson Stark comments: "There have been 1,251 postseason games in baseball history. Only two others -- two -- ever ended this way, with a walk-off extra-base hit by a team that was one out away from losing.

"One was The Kirk Gibson Game -- Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, Gibson homering off Dennis Eckersley, Jack Buck warbling: "I don't believe what I just saw."

"The other was The Bill Bevens Game -- Game 4 of the 1947 World Series, when Yankees pitcher Bill Bevens got within one out of the first no-hitter in World Series history, and then lost it all. Lost his win. Lost his place in immortality. Lost it on a two-run double by Cookie Lavagetto with two outs in the ninth.

"And now here we are, still talking about it today, more than six decades later. Why? Because the October dots connect it with this game. OK, now get the picture? This wasn't just another walk-off win that unfolded in South Philadelphia on Monday. This was history."

LARRY MENDTE IS PITCHING NEW TV SHOW: The Inquirer reports: "The former CBS3 anchor, dismissed from the station in 2008 for tapping into coanchor Alycia Lane's e-mail, is trying to get back on the air as the host of a proposed TV series titled Coming Clean. In an eight-minute pitch targeted at TV station managers across the country and recently posted on YouTube, Mendte describes the syndicated project, created with the local production company Banyan. ... The former anchor promises to provide a sympathetic ear in these interviews. 'After all,' he says in the sales pitch, 'I know what it's like to come clean. After the FBI raided my house, I stood up in front of the world and came clean about accessing my coanchor's e-mail account.'"

ANTI-ISLAM POLITICIAN TO SPEAK AT TEMPLE: The Daily News reports: "A student organization's event scheduled for tonight has caused quite a stir on Temple University's campus. The Student Senate has joined ranks with several organizations decrying a student group's invitation to Dutch politician Geert Wilders, known for anti-Islamic and anti-immigration beliefs, to speak on campus. ... In 2008, Wilders escaped prosecution in England for allegedly inciting hatred of Muslims after releasing his short film "Fitna," in which Quran verses are shown alongside images from terrorist attacks. Before that, Wilders had called for bans on the Quran - likening it to Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf - and the burka, the Muslim women's garment that covers most of the body."

The Daily News reports disgraced former CBS3 anchor Larry Mendte is returning to the airwaves in New York. "Mendte - who has been off the air since his highly publicized firing from the station in June 2008 after an FBI investigation found he had hacked into former co-worker Alycia Lane's e-mail account - has been working on commentary pieces for WPIX-TV for the last month, WPIX news director Bill Carey said last night. Carey expects Mendte to become a full-time WPIX employee in the "next couple of weeks," he said. The station is in "the process of putting together a deal that would put him on the air five nights a week," he said. Mendte, 53, and his family will remain in Philadelphia, his wife, Dawn Stensland, said last night. Mendte has at least six commentaries in the can and a list of ideas that the station expects to air, said Carey, who worked with Mendte in New York and Chicago. "They will be topically driven on current events," Carey said. "It will feature centerpieces based on Larry's unique take on topics that Larry chooses." First up? Tiger Woods."
