Let’s face it—the last year has been hell for women. From PA’s SB 732 law imposing medically unnecessary regulations on abortion clinics to the strange “religious liberty” battle over free contraception and women’s wellness services under the Affordable Care Act (and everything in between), the fight to keep reproductive choice intact was fiercer than ever before. And let’s not forget the infamous congressional hearing on contraceptives that was suspiciously absent of women who could actually speak about women’s issues. It’s a mess, to put it mildly. But what do locals have to say about it? PW rounded up the six most memorable tweets from 2012 to give you an idea.

Rape is never legitimate; neither is the control of a uterus by anyone other than its owner.

The quote by Women’s Law Project’s Executive Director Carol E. Tracy is a response to Rep. Todd Akin’s (R) misinformed, unfortunate and downright dumbfounding remark that women can shut down their bodies and prevent pregnancy during “legitimate rape.” We’re still trying to figure out what that means.

and then the Legitimate Rapist and the Unborn Rape Embryo held hands and walked into the sunset

Think that’s what Akin and the anti-choice conservatives dream about?

If abortion is murder... Does that make condoms kidnapping?

Whether you are pro-choice or anti-choice, the idea that “abortion is murder” is shrouded in complexity and deluding morality—especially when you consider this profound question.
Inquiring minds want to know.

The trouble with the ProLife movement isn’t valuing life. It’s limiting whose life we value.

As if it hasn’t been drummed it into our ears enough, anti-choices claim to “protect” life by working to make abortion illegal--even in the cases of rape, incest and if the mother’s life is in danger. Seems a bit hypocritical, no?

Republicans may have good ideas, I just can’t hear them over the sound of them trying
to break into my uterus.

It really is hard to hear with all that noise in your lady parts. The small government—except when it comes to women’s bodies—disrupts women’s ability to pop out slimy little ones while baking apple pie and being thankful for God’s gift to their vagina.

Lent. You’d think giving up your reproductive rights was enough, no?

Never one to mince words. PW’s senior writer Tara Murtha is the Yoda of Twitter when it comes to women’s health care.
