Most of your friends who moved to Boulder to “just live for a little while” probably found it redundant when Colorado legalized recreational marijuana last month in a statewide ballot referendum. But they did. And so did Washington state. Which means, who knows, marijuana legalization could come here soon, too, right?

Tradition would say otherwise. Over the last four years, two medical marijuana bills have sat in the Pennsylvania Legislature just waiting to come up for a vote. And they haven’t. Not once. But advocates hope next year will be different.

“We’re sending around the co-sponsorship memo,” says state Sen. Daylin Leach of the new push for legislation. Leach has been the prime sponsor of a medical marijuana bill for the last two legislative sessions. “Hopefully, we’ll get all those [who co-sponsored the bill last year] to do it again and get new people, as well. It’s becoming clearer that you can be open about supporting medical options for everybody.”

Most recently, in April 2011, Senate Bill 1003 was introduced by Leach and Sens. Larry Farnese, Wayne Fontana and Jim Ferlo to local fanfare but zero national attention. The Committee on Public Health and Welfare refused to hold hearings on it which basically means that Leach & co. need to re-
introduce it in the new year.

Marijuana advocates have used every tactic in the book to get Harrisburg on the record with this thing, including—but not exclusively—getting several members of the U.S. armed forces to testify on behalf of using the stuff to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.

And polls show that state residents feel pretty positive about the issue. A 2010 Franklin & Marshall survey showed that 80 percent of Pennsylvanians favored legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes, which is massive bipartisan support in a state where there is often none.

“It’s a tragedy that people are being denied medical marijuana because of irrational wives’ tales and a disregard for sound science,” says Leach, who says it’s “inevitable” that a bill in Pennsylvania eventually passes. (It would still have to get past Gov. Corbett, who views marijuana as a “gateway drug.”)

While only 33 percent of Pennsylvanians in that poll favored full legalization, the number has been steadily rising. “Discussions have already started with politicians in Harrisburg about crafting a comprehensive legalization bill,” says Chris Goldstein, a local marijuana advocate who serves on the board of directors of the Philly chapter of the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws (NORML). “One that would cover medical use, industrial hemp and regulated, recreational cannabis. We expect more info in December and a bill introduction in early 2013.”

“National polling shows a majority of Americans support full legalization,” Goldstein continues. (According to a poll released this week by Public Policy Polling, 58 percent of Americans favor legalization.) “I think that as other states move forward, Pa. residents and politicians will not want to be left behind.”

“If you want to find out how in touch with reality your favorite politician is, look at their position on legalizing medical cannabis. As in nearly every state in the Union, over three-quartes of Pennsylvanians support legalizing medical marijuana. Yet the Governor not only opposes the idea, but clings to outdated and unsupported ideas like the "gateway drug theory to justify his opposition. ("After decades of looking, scientists still have no evidence that marijuana causes people to use harder drugs." Former US Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders). Voters should keep this in mind the next time they are in the voting booth.”

“I am a PA resident who uses cannabis to treat lung disorder & asthma for 31 years now. It allows me to breath in a deep, un-labored breathe.
I'm a patient with no legal access to a natural medicine that helps me to breath.

I have tried every medication that Big Pharma offers & I have great benefits.
I'm a computer admin. to a 40 million dollar company.
All the medications have a string of side effects & other medications to treat the side effects. Here is the short list of why I don't use them- nasea, shaking, loss of appetite, speed-ed up heart rate, anxiousness, & non of them open up my airways to relaxed, deep breathing like cannabis.
Legalize it , tax it, & stop making sick people -criminals.
Thank you.

Unfortunately, big gov't has produced big gains for their efforts. The state would reap more assests for there money spent if the Private Sector managed and regulated sales. The state would only collect, not throw good money after bad. Marihuana should be Taxed at 25% across the board to raise more revenue for states and regulated by the private sector and corporations.”

“Estimates show that marijuana is America’s number one cash crop. However, marijuana remains untaxed. This is a new source of income for our nation, an income we desperately need.

Over 500 of the nation’s top economic professors have shared their opinion in supporting the removal of prohibition and imposing the taxation and regulation of marijuana as a way to slow the federal deficit.

Ending marijuana prohibition would save the US $7.7 BILLION annually. That is nearly as much as Congress’ proposed Budget Control Act. Think of the jobs it would create, the court time I would save and the jail space it would free up for actual criminals.

“Alcohol is such a moneymaker and is being pushed down everyone's throats- it's sexy, you have to have it at every party, etc., etc. Marijuana users are viewed as lazy stoners. Alcohol is responsible for a lot of violence and traffic accidents. Drinkers develop a false sense of brevado. You smoke some pot and you KNOW you are not right to drive a car. I think there would be a lot less domestic violence if a couple used some pot together vs drinking. One of the things that would come with the legalization of marijuana- aside from the tax money- is that the potency and quality could be regulated. Using marijuana medically makes all the sense in the world, but I also see it as a better alternative for responsible adults who just want to chill out.”

So simple, it can be a relief from prescription costs, and older citizens who can't handle dangerous painkillers and sedatives. How many people have overdosed from a little marijuana? How drunk driving type stories have you heard? Alcohol is far more dangerous, do the research, get educated. Criminal penalties for drug possession is uncivilized and has led to people's lives being destroyed for no reason. Education is the key to keeping your kids off drugs. Not criminal penalties.”

It treats my myoclonic jerks, anxiety, depression, swollen joints, back/headache pain and insomnia. If it weren't for my elderly parents, I would've moved to a medical marijuana state years ago, or never even moved back to PA in the first place. Look at who supports full legalization or medical access vs those opposed, and follow the money trail. The first will get you to medical professionals, law enforcement, military, and research individuals and organizations. The second will get you to those who get funds for the war on drugs, the lumber industry, and Big Pharma. Who do you think has an ulterior motive?”

I would like to know exactly what demographic they poll when they come up with these numbers that say only 33% are in favor. As a steelworker in Pittsburgh, I have watched a countless number of my fellow workers, of whom I have/had never once felt like I was in danger working next to doing dangerous jobs, lose their jobs because pf random drug testing with 0 tolerance if caught in your system. Before anyone jumps me, that is irresponsible on their part I agree. But to lose your job for something as harmless, and yes it is harmless, is unproductive to society and the economy! I can say that because I have smoked enough of it in my forty years and managed to raise 3 kids and be a successful, respected member of the community and earned that knowledge.”

Imagine how peaceful life can be and how uniting it can be to appreciate everyone's differences. Marijuana can do a lot of good to those who desire to try or use it. It also would help to educate people on marijuana. I see many benefits of this plant, and by the way, how amazing it is that the brain itself has receptors to take in it's compounds? The cannabinoids in it can cure cancer, it can be used for pain relief, it can help deal with seizures, those with debilitating arthritis to be able to walk and heal, etc. The list goes on and on!!!

The biggest issue is that the marijuana that people get in "illegal states" are not regulated, scanned for mites and fungus, and without a lot of varieties. There are so many different types out there and they all have different uses. It is not a gateway drug... Alcohol is more of a "gateway drug" and it is legal!!!

Education about marijuana is the most important thing that we are lacking. Once I learned about the true reasons why marijuana is illegal and all of it medicinal benefits I realized I was lied to by our Gov't and that set me on a path of fighting for legalization. Wake up PA!”

TV, movies, and propaganda have made cannabis a joking matter when in fact it is far less harmful than alcohol and prescription drugs which contain chemicals that have not been long term tested. Everyday on the TV commercials you hear something like this: "have you, or a relative, died because they used XYorZ prescription drug? Cannabis is safe and totally fine to use. “Over twenty years ago I was what you would consider a daily marijuana smoker. I preferred smoking, instead of consuming alcoholic beverages. I found smoking to be much more relaxing, allowing me to unwind after a stressful day of work. It didn't lead to harder drugs. I know this is a personal choice, each person has to make. Just because you occasionally of often smoke, does not mean you will automatically have any interest or desire to try harder/dangerous drugs. In fact smoking marijuana actually aided me, when I kicked a two pack a day cigarette habit. I haven't smoked marijuana in close to 20 years (only because its illegal and I figured it wasn't worth getting legally jammed up as I grew older) but if they legalized it in PA, I would occasionally smoke. I'd sit on my back porch, watch the deer graze and enjoy the sunset. I wouldn't be out driving around, partying like a nut or raising hell. I'm now in my mid 40's and I suffer from a serious back injury that required surgery and spinal fusion. I'm temporarily disabled and for now, I can't even work because of it. I refuse to take pain prescriptions because all that crap is simply not good for you. Anyway... it really is time for PA to take a good look at this situation and come up with a responsible way to move forward on the issue. The Feds are already trying to decide how they are going to deal with states that have fully legalized recreational use of marijuana. The President has already commented on this issue....how does the Federal government enforce marijuana laws, in states that have legalized it? This subject is certainly interesting...that coming from a guy that hasn't smoked it in 20 years.”

I am sure I would have tried those other drugs even if I never smoked MJ. Alcohol basically destroyed my life and was responsible for two auto accidents. I was never addicted to MJ because it is not addictive, cigarettes are and they kill 450,000 in the US each year. Alcohol is responsible for many deaths from alcohol poisoning to liver and heart disease and as far as I am concerned should be outlawed. How many families have been destroyed by alcohol inuding some very prominent politicians and business men. Why has Phillip Morris bought thousands of acres of land in California's growing triangle? They are not making the super profits they made years ago when everyone smoked cigs and they are ready to take advantage of the public again and probably add something to it to make addictive or harmful!”

Someone commented about deregulation saving money because there'd be fewer people going to prison, etc. Well everyone really needs to wake up and understand that big business runs this country not the asshole politicians. They are making tons of money off of privatized prisons. Drug companies are probably the strongest lobby aside from oil companies, they have tried to replicate the effects of MJ in a pill form and have failed so they definitely don't want it legalized. WHY is the FDA lying and keeping marijuana banned? In my experience as a Pharmacy Tech, I have dealt with many customers who suffer with different types of pain & mental health issues. These patients are depended on Narcotics and some Opioids. After time, Pharmaceuticals will damage your body physically and mentally. I am disabled and in being so I am unable to physically work. if I could grow marijuana and make a legal profit from it, I could become less dependent on state driven programs that offer aid to disabled individuals like disability. I used to grow marijuana many years ago and grew it for the love of the plant. I was caught and endured incarceration because of it though. I very rarely smoked marijuana, however i thoroughly enjoyed the entire process of indoor cultivation and hydroponics. not only was I growing marijuana, but many types of vegetables and herbs. I have a wealth of marijuana botanical knowledge from studies, research, and applied experience. I would love to grow marijuana and provide a benefit for the public domain legally. This would be nothing short of amazing and has the potential to provide many job opportunities for legal marijuana cultivators. Absolutely brilliant!!!

Science and All Medical research has long proven with many other states that have passed it already or long ago that it does help with chronic pain and is not in any way something that one can easily get addicted or needing to constantly up their doses such as any Opiates be they legally prescribed or illegal off the streets. So many still smoke it & easily find many ways to obtain it, Amsterdam which actually has one of the lowest drug addiction records, it is fully legal to grow, possess, & sell, even smoke fully openly on the streets, Pot smokers are Non-violent and have no withdrawl ever. Time for those who suffer from pain that could be treated and reduced with the use of medical marijuana, to take legal action against the state. Medical Professionals, Medical Caregivers, Patients of illnesses who would medically benefit from "Medical Marijuana", and Family Members affected by seeing the needless suffering of their loved ones must all come together, and make the state responsible for "Needless Pain and Suffering".

I know very little about the law, but one can sue for pain and suffering if I am correct. For those who know what Medical Marijuana can offer to a person suffering needlessly without Medical Marijuana, then seek out a class action lawsuit to file against the state of Pennsylvania, and all of its legal representatives. I would think a "Class Action Lawsuit" would be the way to go in making sure that a Medical Marijuana Use Law would be Passed in Pennsylvania once and for all.

“This state would make a lot of money if they would legalize marijuana. Myself being someone who has very painful illnesses can tell you marijuana helps with the pain and you aren't zoned out from pills. Marijuana has many beneficial properties for those suffering from debilitating diseases. Also think of the jobs this could provide. It's pretty sad that our country's capital has legalized marijuana for medical uses but our state legislation has not done so yet.”

Marijuana is Schedule I while dangerous and addictive cocaine and heroin are listed Schedule II. The Republican party refuses to pass legislation on the state or Federal level, often refusing to hear testimony or bring the bill to a vote on the floor of State and Federal government(s), even for debate while wasting billions of dollars on antiquated laws for marijuana prohibition, while chronic pain patients like me suffer and resort to Big Pharma's mercy with addictive narcotic pain pills which are also addictive and kill everyday. If all else fails, no other meds really work or there's nothing else, then what is there to lose. It may not work in all people, but isnt that the case in all medicines? The fact, that they can take out the THC in the marijuana, which is what causes folks to use it improperly and cause themselves a problem or others problems. Medical marijuana is a plant as many other medicines are plants. Our Earth has so much in natural health, and has been ultilized, but not enough. We still have many more medical break-thrus to be discovered, and getting one more to help people and use it as its suppose to be used, is another plus for the people who need it.”

“My name is Andrew Pana of California. In May. of 2012 my wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of 38. The doctors could give her no hope. She did have chemo and radiation, the doctors thought that could prolong her life for a little while. In September of 2013 she done surgery, that's when they found out that the cancer had spread to her lymp nodes in her left hip area and couldn't get it all with the surgery. Now it looked like 2-4 months is all she would live. It was a very aggressive form of colorectal cancer.

While searching through the internet, my wife and I found so many testimonies on Rick Simpson healing oil, The Rick Simpson hemp oil for "health" is medicine. So i ordered the miracle oil for my wife and she started taking the hemp oil medicine every day. "GOD'S NATURAL MEDICINE".

It was two years before the doctors finally gave me a good report concerning my wife's condition. It was certainly not an overnight miracle. glory be Jesus and the great man Rick Simpson who God himself sent to help us in our lost time (health) Mr. Simpson, God will continue to be blessing you all the day of your life Sir!

He revealed to me that all hope are not gone concerning my wife health So I, must keep my eyes focused on Him and His Medicine and not on the storm of cancer all around us (the doctors reports, test results, the pain, what other people said). He is so faithful to His Promises! There were so many different things that happened during this time and afterwards but this is the story in brief. I give Jesus my Lord all the glory and praise to Rick Simpson the founder of hemp oil for healing my wife's stage 4 cancer.

A special thanks to you Sir, brothers, sisters help me thank this man of truth and courage because he is my hero.
