Let me clue you in on a little publishing world secret: Many of the year- in-review photo essays you see everywhere this time of year are a stopgap measure to allow vacation-starved writers and editors to get some much needed R&R. As you read this, newsrooms across the land stand silent and empty.
I'm not making this up. The staffs of Time, Newsweek, The Onion--even Matt Drudge and his stupid hat--are poolside in the Caribbean, nipping mojitos in their finest cabaa wear, stoned off their tits on Ecstasy.
It's not like anything happens during the holidays. As long as Osama remains a free man, the economy continues to bounce like a yo-yo and Strom Thurmond keeps his cold, dead hands off the help we'll be just fine on autopilot.
In our case, though, the year in photos is hardly a throwaway. The photos featured in this issue were taken by our staff photographer Jessica Griffin, who's got a great eye for the poetry of the streets.
Choosing the pictures for this year-end essay proved difficult. Going over the possible selections, we were struck once again by the richness and diversity of our neighborhoods. The pictures we decided to include capture a moment in time. They reveal a bit of ourselves--in all our various moods and ambitions. On these pages is just a sampling of photographs from the past year.
Speaking of revealing, the Daily News guys are starting up a nude volleyball game with the chicks from Philly Style. And you know what that means: Bye-bye, Speedo.
See you next year!
