Charity Gift Market might have been just about the only online web store to actually raise its prices over Thanksgiving weekend. That wasn’t because their marketing department was stuck in a time warp. Rather, the website—which exclusively sells products made by charities around the world, with all profits going to benefit their causes—held an “Un-Sale” of products via Made By Survivors, a nonprofit that employs survivors of slavery and human-rights abuses. But Made By Survivors is just one of the many charities featured on Charity Gift Market, the brainchild of local social entrepreneurs Lindsey and Andy Markelz, who run the site out of a Camden office. After a beta launch in summer 2011, Charity Gift Market stepped out into the public eye this past spring; according to site stats, they’ve since raised close to $20,000 and helped out more than 200,000 people. The website’s construction allows would-be customers to search by product, by specific charity organization, or by general type of cause. And those causes include health, human trafficking, education, disaster relief, basic needs, adoption and lots more, as the spectrum of participating charities takes users from a Camden IP address to the world—the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia. So if you’re really into both online gift-buying and supporting high-minded community activism, Charity Gift Market may be your one stop for the holidays.
