... DJ Omega and DJ Freaknasty?
Name: DJ Freaknasty
Age: 22
Hometown: North Philly.
Background: Freaknasty started off as a dancer and then began DJing. He invented Philly's Wu-Tang dance.
On Wu-Tanging: "It came out at the end of 2001. Back then we were all doing the Freak It dance, but it was getting played out. I was on the mike at a small club in North Philly while my man was spinning, and I decided to try out something new. I was chanting, 'Whoop that thang, whoop that thang,' but the crowd interpreted and repeated it as 'Wu-Tang, Wu-Tang,' which I wasn't even saying. Next thing you know, I'm goin' with it. They're feelin' it."
On meeting Omega: "When a promoter first handed me Omega's Enter the Wu-Tang CD, I thought, 'Wait a minute-this is my dance.' I was kind of pissed. I asked where he came from and is he a dancer, and they said, 'Nah, he's a DJ.' So we met up at a club, connected and got together the next week."
Coming next: "The Do That Dance DVD is in production. We're also shooting a video for the 'Wu-Tang Theme.' This winter I'll be bringing out a new dance called Twist It, Pull It."
Name: DJ Omega
Age: 22
Hometown: South Jersey.
Background: Omega started spinning records at 12 and became the youngest FM DJ in Philly history at 17. He released his Enter the Wu-Tang mix CD in May.
On their new "Wu-Tang Theme" song : "The most popular club tracks to do the dance to are an instrumental called 'Funky Horns' and one called 'Okay' with a Lil Jon sample. These were getting old so we made an instructional "Wu-Tang Theme" song. People love being given instructions at the party, so the Wu-Tang is goin' down."
On the perceived violence surrounding the dance: "People are serious about their art. It's a release where they let everything out of their system. It's a battle-same as an MC battle. Some people are aggressive in their movements; some are more passive and technical. The core of the competition is confrontation."
Wu-Tang vs. Chicken Noodle Soup, etc.: "They do the Poole Palace dance in Atlanta. They go dumb and get hyphy in Oakland. You're gonna Wu-Tang in Philly if you wanna get live. It's our time to shine, our revolution."
