The Starting Line

It’s hard to root against local boys who’ve “made it” ... unless it’s a band like the Starting Line. Does Tallahassee rejoice when Creed rolls into town? Does Atlanta freak out when Collective Soul fills up the Tabernacle or Philips Arena? Possibly. Philly has certainly shown enough love to these central PA boys by buying every single ticket of their two “reunion” holiday shows. After three brutal records of power-emo-punk-pop, the band decided to give the world a breather from their insufferable brand of whine. Sure, they’ve toured with bigger versions of their painful sound like New Found Glory and Taking Back Sunday. But a Warped Tour does not a band make. It’s hard to believe there’s still a market for this horseshit. If Dashboard Confessional is the patriarch of emo, the Starting Line are their obnoxious, angsty teenagers.

Tues., Dec. 29, 8:30pm. Sold out. With Valencia + Dangerous Summer. Theatre of the Living Arts, 334 South St. 215.922.1011.

Wed., Dec 30, 8:30pm. Sold out. With Envy on the Coast + Algernon Cadwallader. Trocadero, 1003 Arch St. 215.922.6888.

“honestly, I'm not the biggest Starting Line fan. HOWEVER, this is a pretty uncalled for shun against people who just like to listen to a band they enjoy and see their favorite band play a show for the fans. The Starting Line have been a fan loyal band even in hiatus mode and this was a great opportunity for fans to see the boys from churchville come out and play an energy packed show for them. I'm not up in arms about this review but it is really stupid. It's Philadelphia Weekly, what do people expect. PW is the philly equivalent of the Trentonian, a rag composed of smarmy journalists who can't make it pass the newspaper print form and have to tear down what they think isn't passable. “Well this was an interesting read. I will keep it clean, but I am actually disappointed by this article. Why would a website that prides itself in journalism higher someone to write an article on something they are ignorant to. That's equivalent to asking a Philly writer to elaborate on Tony Romo. You missed every mark on how great this reunion was. This band has been a driving force within the genre and fans alike for years. Why don't you just come out and say that you don't understand it or didn't do the research on it instead of bashing it. Many a writer has done that in history, and it has been a disappointing trend in modern journalism. Go write about what you know, and in the meantime The Starting Line will continue to play music that allows old and new fans alike to put the negativity aside from everything else, and enjoy life.

“I totally respect the opinions of everybody. I do not care if you love or hate the starting line. But this article really lacks support to back up why you think this. The Starting Line has an interesting story to tell about their rollercoaster of events with labels and their constant dedication to touring and being personable with fans. You are allowed to dislike the band, but you have to give them credit for what they have accomplished in their career. Local Philly band receives national attention, tours the US relentlessly, and has successful tours in other countries.

So the The Starting Line, if you are reading this... I'm proud of you "obnoxious, angsty teenagers" for all that you have done over the years. You have accomplished what many bands dream of and I'll always appreciate your contribution to the music scene. You'll always have my respect and support.”

TSL is a band that is not only one of the defining bands in this genre, but they are also wonderful to their fans and genuinely great guys. You won't hear about Kenny Vasoli instigating fistfights with members of 311.

According to your Myspace, you possess a Masters Degree in Magazine Journalism. Your total lack of professionalism and tact says otherwise. What do you see as music that is not "horseshit" then?

I can't believe a State article would openly slate and try and turn people against a band which are all born and bred there. It's ridiculous. If anything they should take pride in the fact that the band have done so well for themselves and made PA a place known for a good music scene.

At first when he said "brutal" as the way they say the Pop-Punk / Hardcore scenes and I thought we were all on the same page, but then I realised that he meant it in a bad way.

The Warped Tour makes a good band like any other festival makes a good band. Where you need to be well-liked and noticed to be a part of it, and it's safe to say that The Starting Line have always been one of those bands.

They were excited to play for us and enjoyed every single fucking minute of being up there. I've been a TSL fan foreverr and to see someone who clearly has no moral values or respect for anyone bash a band that has so much pure talent is disgraceful. Look at your music on your myspace page? You're a faggot that has no room to disrespect a band that is made up of pure skill and genuine people. We as fans adore their music, but in return The Starting Line adores us. When you are young of course you are going to write about things that are important to you - in this case mostly girls. If that comes of as whiney oh well, at least it is genuine and true, its what makes people relate to them.

“A little confused as to why you have the starting line (and only tsl) listed under your music interests on your myspace?”

“The only reason why you posted this was to get attention. Whether is was negative or positive. The Starting Line is a great band and has paved the way for other bands.”

“I have been a fan of The Starting Line since its inception and i traveled 5 and a half hours to get to Philly to see the reunion show. I have seen them 7 different occasions and never have a seen such an emotional show.

Everything that Kenny said about how successful the shows were was completely true, if you could see the passion that everyone at those shows had you would feel really stupid. To openly bash a hometown band that has found success, took a break for a year and a half and STILL kept their fan base through everything is astounding. Bands are so easily forgotten and for TSL's fans to stick around goes to show you that they are not your every day band, and you cant even show respect for that?

I guess it goes to show how much your opinion really matters to patrons of Philly and elsewhere. You're unprofessionalism is profound, almost as much so as your ignorance. You're a poor excuse for a journalist, you deserve every hateful thing said about you, and i hope you get fired. I'll just end this with a quote.

"I'll be your friend in hell until then i despise you, and i probably always will." -TSL

“I hadn't ever heard of the starting line before, I had to youtube 'em just to see what all the fuss was about. and, eh... holy shit what fucking crap music. Is it difficult for you retards to like them and keep your penises at the same time? do your balls just slowly shrivel up? that "article" summed up TSL experience pretty well, and bill may have been the only gay dude within 500 miles who wasn't at the show. wankers.”

“first of all, your opinion of "emo" bands (these aren't real emo, people keep forgetting) as childish is unfounded. but I'm not going to argue about that because it's an opinion, not a fact.

second of all we're not angry because he's bashing a band that some of us like, but because he's bashing them for no good reason, and as Kenny replied with, he's not doing anything good for himself or the PW by writing this.”

“I'm sorry but would he still be lacking journalistic integrity in all of your eyes if he came at the group with unsupported, unconditional praise?

none of the pro-TSL comments above have really convinced me of the band's worth or creative merit, only that their fans are a bunch of whiney jerks who can't reconcile opinions that conflict with their own.”
