Listen to the Victor Victor Band on the Umm...Drop Podcast.

Philadelphia’s Victor Victor Band began unexpectedly, when husband and wife Jamie and Danielle Victor decided to host a rock star-themed Halloween party. They purchased a drum kit for Danielle, while Jamie stuck with his trustworthy guitar. They learned a few cover tunes and showcased their newfound talent for friends on Halloween in 2005.

“It began as just a ‘Haha, let’s have a rock star Halloween party,’ but after the party, we just didn’t want to stop playing. That’s when we started writing our own songs,” explains Danielle of Victor Victor Band’s origin. The duo played their first official show in 2006 and released their first album, Chatterbox , two years later.

Given the band’s full, almost chaotic sound—an unexpected mix of the Thermals, the Strokes and the Mountain Goats, the modern reinvention of gritty, lo-fi rock ’n’ roll—and densely layered tunes, it’s a bit shocking to realize that drummer and keyboardist Danielle (she plays both simultaneously) had never played an instrument before that Halloween party.

“It’s interesting. She brings a different perspective,” Jamie says. Danielle concurs. “I think of music differently than Jamie. I have to think about it first because I’m doing the two things at once. I hear something in my head and I have to figure out how I’m going to do that with one hand while the other is doing something completely different.”

With a wry laugh, Jamie adds, “I think it’s funny because Danielle’s never played instruments, she’s never been in a band. I’ve been playing since I was 13, and she’s more of a rock star than I am. When we get done playing, people say, ‘You’re okay, but she’s amazing.’”

“I saw this band many times and I just love them! What a great couple they make and even though their music is a little loud for me, it's great. I enjoyed the beat and hope they make it really big.”
