Night Panther

Apparently, there are parties aplenty in Philadelphia in “celebration” of the Mayan’s predicted doomsday, but one of the most rad will be the Mayan Apocalypse Party at Johnny Brenda’s. That’s because they created the perfect lineup of futuristic-sounding bands to rope in the end of the world. Wolf Like a Stray Dog, the debut LP by Norwegian Arms—written by songwriter Brendan Mulvihill during his year-long fellowship in Tomsk, Russia—embodies the “quest for identity” and the challenge of adjusting to new surroundings, ideas that eerily mimic the possible aftermath of a havoc-reeked Earth. The self-described “weirdo folk group” has got a sound reminiscent of Matt and Kim times Animal Collective, so expect the energy level to be on high during their set. Other acts for the night include Laser Background, a music project with a funhouse vibe and groovy ghoul-y vocals; Mister Not Pavement and Night Panther, a four-person collective who label their genre as “sex-pop.” Then, DJ Eddie Austin will be spinning danceable beats until the party or the world ends, whichever comes first.

Aside from all the awesome music on deck, we know what’s really on your mind: What will the end of the world taste like? Little Baby’s Ice Cream knows—or will, at least. In honor of the Apocalypse fest, Little Baby’s is creating an apocalypse-flavored ice cream. We were so intrigued by the event flyer that we called into the shop last week to beg for a pre-end-of-the-world sampling, only to find that they hadn’t created it yet and didn’t know exactly what it’s going to taste like. What they do know, however, is that it will be black—or so they hope. And if black ice cream doesn’t bring you to this party, we don’t know what will.

Fri., Dec. 21, 9:15pm. $10. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave. johnnybrendas.com
