Critic's Pick: Mannequin Pussy

Remember Mannequin, the movie? It was released in 1987 and shot in Philadelphia. Andrew McCarthy plays a mannequin-maker who falls in love with a mannequin played by Kim Cattrall. But she’s not really a mannequin—she’s a time traveling ancient Egyptian who goes into the future on a mission to find true love. Yeah, it’s bullshit, but most of it was filmed in Wanamaker’s (which we now call Macy’s Center City). Despite a confusing plot, the film confirms that some mannequins do, in fact, have pussies. Enter: Mannequin Pussy, a brat-punk duo from New York City featuring guitarist/vocalist Marisa Dabeast and drummer Athanasios Paul. There’s a song called “Meatslave 2” on the band’s four-song Clue Juice EP. It’s a sloppy, jangly slow-burner that brings to mind images of Andrew McCarthy fucking an ancient Egyptian mannequin. Ewww. The duo opens tonight’s girl-centric bill with Dear Althea, Little Big League and Slutever.
