“I write my own rhymes, produce my own shit/ Yeah boy, I ain’t the one to fuck with,” boasts Bronx, N.Y.-born MC/Producer Diamond D on “Best Kept Secret” from Diamond D & the Psychotic Neurotics’ Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop (1992). Featuring the first appearances by D.I.T.C. crew members Fat Joe and Big L (Rest in peace), it remains one of the best rap albums ever made. D.I.T.C equals Digging in the Crates. It’s the art (searching through crates of vinyl for lost gems) that happens before the art (sampling those records to produce banging hip-hop beats). Diamond D’s the king of it all—the master of the dig and sample. Like Indiana Jones, he dodges boulders and tricks Nazis in order to retrieve sonic jewels, polish them, and present them to the world. Tonight, as the living legend spins from his personal crate, ye shall bounce and ye shall be edified.
