Luscious Jackson

Luscious Jackson
Magic Hour
(City Song)
Sounds like: The first LP since ‘99’s outstanding Electric Honey, and it is tightly-produced sickness. They focus on what they know: bouncy grooves and riffy funkpop.
Free association: It’s here! It’s so nice to not be disappointed by your heroes of the ‘90s.
For fans of: Blondie x the Beasties, Beck with the Breeders, Sleater-Kinney aiming at party pop.

Midlake
Antiphon
(ATO Records)
Sounds like: The Denton sextet’s one of the most dynamic indie rock bands in the game, this time pinching off way more Pink Floyd than normal. And it’s great.
Free association: Ever thought ‘Sure wish this Fleet Foxes record had more teeth?’
For fans of: Pink Mountaintops x Yo La Tengo + Spoon, Grandaddy/Iron & Wine, chillfolk.

Swearin’
Surfing Strange
(Salinas Records)
Sounds like: Allison Crutchfield and Kyle Gilbride are a brilliant pair (and now Philadelphians!) whose band is picking up steam; with this one, they expand and crystallize.
Free association: We couldn’t be prouder of this punky rock family falling into our bosom.
For fans of: Waxahatchee x No Age + Jawbreaker, Kurt Vile & Co., Philly courting creativity.

White Denim
Corsicana Lemonade
(Downtown)
Sounds like: The sixth from the Austin quartet’s another beautifully bluesy mix of funk, glamor, psychedelia and foot-stompin’, room-churnin’ southern indie rock.
Free association: Not really sure why folks haven’t jumped on the WD train. It’s real fun.
For fans of: Early Kings of Leon x Jeff Tweedy, Divine Fits/Woods, brown liquor, longhairs.

Sky Ferreira
Night Time, My Time
(Capitol)
Sounds like: The much-anticipated debut LP of the Venice Beach baby (who went on holidays with Michael Jackson) is an awesomely mixed bag of honest girlpop.
Free association: Nothing is off-limits here; all her fears (and nips) are on display.
For fans of: Prince x The Runaways + Britney, Gwen Stefani/Alice Cooper, burgeoning messes.
