Pyramid of the Sun

(Temporary Residence)

Sounds Like: Another mind-blowing Athens, Ga., band; veteran instrumental rockers steeped in psychedelics who rock extra hard to honor their late drummer, Jerry Fuchs.

Free Association: Proof you don’t need vocals to be a kickass rock band.

For Fans Of: Pink Floyd x Tortoise, Neu!, Headlights, the Rapture.

Dark Light

Sounds Like: Delightfully eerie synth-driven and percussion-heavy three-part lady harmonies on Portland, Ore.’s newest incarnation of Carolyn Berk’s songwriting.

Free Association: Sexy ambiguous punk girls make grimy, pretty beats.

For Fans Of: Gossip x Duran Duran, the Knife, Tegan & Sara, but better.

Pigeon John
Dragon Slayer
(Quannum Projects)

Sounds Like: The L.A. rapper takes a new turn with a more commercial and less underground vibe, introducing a lot more indie rockness and pop appeal.

Free Association: Some sick moments of funk genius with light-hearted, chill lyricism.

For Fans Of: Big Boi, Blackalicious, Janelle Monae, Pharcyde.

Zion I
Atomic Clock

(Gold Dust Media)

Sounds Like: Genre-blending duo from the Bay Area’s futuristic hip-hop is upbeat and socially conscious, but the faith is buried beneath tight production and sick beats.

Free Association: Hip-hop and Christianity can be really boring—this just isn’t.
