My Brightest Diamond

All Things Will Unwind

(Asthmatic Kitty)

Sounds Like: Opera-trained but underground-bred, Shara Worden offers a rich third LP with a yMusic strings ensemble collab; quirky, ornately composed alt-folk.

Free Association: She’s one of Sufjan’s Illinois makers—one tour as a cheerleader.

For Fans Of: Edith Piaf x Regina Spektor, St. Vincent, accordians and woodwinds.

M83

Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming

(Mute)

Sounds Like: Anthony Gozalez’s double-disc electro shoegaze opus is their sixth and best, an artistically- rendered mix of styles with a focus on ’80s atmospherics.

Free Association: The tons-of-synths/sax solos everywhere gig has got to retire soon.

For Fans Of: Air x Four Tet, Cocteau Twins/Brian Eno + Destroyer, French trendsetting.

Phantogram

Nightlife

(Barsuk)

Sounds Like: With a badass debut last year, an EP’s a welcome catalogue addition; their duo rock is psychedelic and rhythm-heavy with airy vocals plus bits of trip-hop.

Free Association: Lead singer Sarah def indulged in loads of weed and Portishead.

“For chrissake, please stop referring to Meshell Ndegeocello as neo soul. That goes for Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Jill Scott, D'Angelo, etc. These artists despise being referred to as "neo" soul.”
