Japanese women playing surf punk is the best thing ever. American women playing surf punk is a close second. Then it's Guitar Wolf, The Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl album and fish and chips fried in beef lard. In that order. Vivian Girls play fantastic Jan and Dean style incompo-pop with great tunes. It rocks. But they also have a penchant for shoegazing. This must be discouraged. Every time they let their gaze drift downward those of us in the front row are duty-bound to click our fingers and wave our arms and shout: "Hey! Oi! Excuse me, miss! Up here! Yes here. Look at me. Make eye contact. Stop staring at your fucking shoes. Thank you." Vivian Girls must be saved from slipping into shabby self-indulgent pseudo-shy shitness. They'll thank us later. (S.W.)

Fri., Sept. 19, 7pm. $30. With Valient Thorr + Year Long Disaster. Electric Factory, 421 N. Seventh St. 215.627.1332.

Like their erstwhile kindred spirits the Ramones, there's a gloriously ludicrous reductionism about Motrhead. Despite their metal tendencies, they have no need for guitar wank-a-thons, big hair or bigger drum solos. No, theirs is a four-decade career focused on keeping things brutally, savagely simple--a near Zenlike approach to being harder, faster, and louder (gut-wrenchingly, stomach-churningly so) than all the rest. Admittedly, they haven't made a decent album since 1980 (Ace of Spades, since you ask ... ), but live they resemble nothing less than the aural equivalent of Genghis Khan and his rampaging hordes. Plus, what's not to love about a band that originally wanted to call themselves "Bastard"? Exactly. (Neil Ferguson)

“Re: Motorhead: Neil, I guess I'll start the shitstorm of flak you are going to get about the "'haven't made a good album since 1980" remark.. Look, I know this pick was assigned to you and you aren't a real fan, that much is glaringly obvious; But wow, an uninformed jab at Motorhead like that only confirms you know nothing of their work outside of the "hit" Ace Of Spades..You are an indie rock guy at best and a metal poser at's okay..just fess up about it.. Oh, and if you want to redeem yourself..go get yourself a copies of the following "decent" Motorhead records. 'Iron Fist', 'Bomber', 'Overkill', and 'Rock n' Roll' Theres so many more...But these albums are a good jump off point for a beginner. See you at the show! (Ha!!! Yeah, right!!)”
