Shakedown Record Label Launch Party

Sat., April 9, 10pm. $8. Silk City, Fifth and Spring Garden sts. 215.592.8838. www.silkcitylounge.com

Like any good entrepreneur, Will "DJ Willyum" Putney knows when it's time to reinvent. The DJ and producer behind Worship Records recently started a new sub-label called Shakedown. Named after the monthly Silk City party of the same name, the Shakedown label aims to showcase the up-and-coming artists in the deep house scene. Saturday's party at Silk City features DJ Rithma, a new talent on the deep house horizon. Rithma was chosen to help launch Shakedown because Putney's been a fan for years. Last month, Putney says, "I was out in San Francisco DJing and catching up with friends and we went to see Rithma. His tracks have a real organic, funky sound-which was exactly what we wanted for the new label." Worship regular Rob Paine and Putney himself are on backup. Look for upcoming releases from Paine and new kids on the block Moqita in the coming months. (Julie Gerstein)

25 Ta Life

Fri., April 8, 9pm. Free. Khyber, 56 S. Second St. 215.238.5888. www.thekhyber.com

Stacie George isn't one of those people who observes the anniversary of her birth with leftover Chinese takeout and warm PBR. She plans ahead. "I love to celebrate my birthday!" the Khyber booker says. This is good news for us, as Stacie's 25th will be commemorated in supreme style with six local DJs: Dave P. (Making Time, Cobras & Matadors), PW contributor Doug Wallen, Brian Labuda (Disorder), Nez (Rock Tits), Andy Ortega (Sunday Services) and Jon (Spaceboy Music). From rock and hip-hop to electro, there'll be a little something for everyone to hustle to. George's favorite band Joe Coffee will play downstairs, and the upstairs will be bumping with friends, strangers, booze and music. For George's next birthday to top this one, Mayor Street would have to jump naked out of a Fudgie the Whale cake. Then again, maybe not. (Emily Brochin)
