DJ Premier

Wed., April 6, 9pm. Free, reservations required. With DJ Revolution. Five Spot, 5 S. Bank St. 215.574.0070. www.thefivespot.com

Just to get it out of the way-this night is essentially one big sloppy promotional kiss from Toyota's customizable Scion, which is being marketed as the car equivalent of a remix. Whether you buy the premise or would even want that much stake in the design process, humoring some perky Scion folks will get you a chance to see DJ Premier. Yes, that DJ Premier. Half of Gang Starr. Producer of Nas, Common, Snoop, D'Angelo, Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Mos Def and Jadakiss. An unspeakably influential voice in hip-hop. What's he up to lately? In addition to running the fairly low-key Year Round label, he's working on a record called Kings of Hip Hop with Mr. Thing, set to drop in May. After spinning at Fluid last spring, Premier returns in the company of DJ Revolution, Scion resident DJs Statik and DJ Question, and Fredy Blast, winner of a regional DJ search. One more thing-the show is free as long as you RSVP at www.scion.com/metro. (Doug Wallen)
