Any time anyone I’ve ever known has gotten a pizza at Dock Street Brewery in West Philly, it’s been burnt on the bottom. Without fail. Bar none. Batting 1,000. Methinks they need to give the bottom of the oven a good scrubbin’, and that’ll handle that. But no matter. Despite the burnt bits, we keep going back. That’s because Dock Street, on top of tasty brews, is attached to Satellite Cafe and Firehouse Bicycles, both wonderful places that, on lazy summer weekends, really make West Philly West Philly. Between the three businesses you’ve got the city’s best people watching: creative types creatin’, readin’ types readin’, bikin’ types bikin’, yuppie types eating burnt pizza, anarchist types begging for their conformist change. That people-watching will be in full summer bloom this Sunday for the first annual “Brews, Bikes and Tunes,” a five-hour festival with live music from venerable heavies Stinking Lizaveta (new album Sacrafice and Bliss—their sixth in 13 years—out now), the Eastern European sounds of the West Philadelphia Orchestra, the clinical prog-rock stomp of Grandchildren and more. Dock Street, normally closed on the Sabbath, will open its doors. Order a salad. (Brian McManus) ■
