Music Issue 2012: Philly Tastemakers Reveal Their Favorite Music

The very first record you purchased? The last one? What show venue in Philadelphia do you like best? Who’s your favorite local artist? And what’re you listening to these days?

We posed those questions to a mix of 60 notable and random Illadelphians and got the best answer of all, one we already knew: Cats here take their music seriously. (And, by the way, if you weren’t already sure, you will be: The Roots really do rule this town.) Check their responses, and post your own.
 

MAYOR MICHAEL A. NUTTER, City of Philadelphia

First record purchased: The Jackson 5. Can’t recall the title.

Last record purchased: My last download was Laura Izibor’s The Brooklyn Sessions, Vol. 1.

Favorite Philly act: The Roots.

Favorite Philly venue: The Dell Music Center.

Now in heavy rotation: My own hip-hop/rap mixtape, with DJ Kool, Jay-Z, Public Enemy, Kool Moe Dee, The Roots, The Sugarhill Gang and Gil Scott-Heron.

First record purchased: Alvin & The Chipmunks, Chipmunks a’ Go-Go.

Last record purchased: A rare Barrington Levy dub 45.

Favorite Philly act: DJ Cash Money & Marvelous.

Favorite Philly venue: Tasty Treats at Fluid.

Now in heavy rotation: Elle Varner, Perfectly Imperfect.

First record purchased: The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Last record purchased: John Mayer, Born and Raised.

“Stop hating. There isn't even an indie rock station on main stream radio in Philly. Philadelphia is known for Soul music and Hip-Hop. And more music industry DJs have come out of Philly than any other city in the world. Whether it's Josh Wink, Diplo or Jazzy Jeff, we have dominated DJ culture for the last 30 years.”

“I call it as I see it, and I see a music scene far more diverse in this city than was given credit by these so-called "taste makers". Maybe if there was someone over 35 contributing to PW, we'd hear about it. Oh, and if you're actually under the impression that there isn't an indie rock station in Philly, there's a little station called WXPN. You should tune in sometime! You'll get all the Avett Brothers and Dr. Dog your little eardrums can handle. (But only if Pitchfork says it's okay)”
