ISAM

(Ninja Tunes)

Sounds Like: The electronic experimental sage is back with another LP of wordless music full of found sounds, beats, clicks, swells and pauses—it’s a trippy ride.

Free Association: You can hear the video game influence. It’s like demonized Zelda.

For Fans Of: Björk x acid jazz, Herbaliser + Flying Lotus, acid Tetris, dark dubstep.

Zachary Cale

Noise of Welcome

(All Hands Electric)

Sounds Like: A Brooklyn songwriter whose croaky, plaintive voice is nicely paired with his gentle, strummed guitar and the airy support of his band (drums, piano, vox).

Free Association: Bittersweet folksy blues from a modern Cohen/Dylan hybrid.

For Fans Of: Nick Drake x AA Bondy, Townes Van Zandt, whiskey salves.

Mia Doi Todd

Cosmic Ocean Ship

(City Zen)

Sounds Like: A California songtress’ super-chill, internationally-inspired folk act started out solo but has slowly brought in help on percussion, dulcimer and strings.

Free Association: Impressed by multi-linguists? You’re going to get major wood for her.

For Fans Of: St. Vincent + Seu Jorge, Tori Amos does world music, lullabies.

“Lady Gaga is a cult leader.

Some people have no one else
to focus on.

It's a good cult.

Her music is redundant but she is
what is important.

Egomania is all a person has to
live on sometimes..give her a break.”
