Watch The Throne
(Def Jam)
Sounds Like: The two most powerful (richest) men in hip-hop team up for a full-blown duet with fancy (expensive) samples, rabid flow and edgy takes on blackness.
Free Association: From “My Adidas” to my Margiela jacket—OK, you rich with taste!
For Fans Of: Guests Beyoncé, Frank Ocean and Otis Redding; hype.
Mason Jennings
Minnesota
(Stats and Brackets)
Sounds Like: The singer/songwriter fled to the Twin Cities to start his career in the late ’90s; this is a pleasant, wistful and easy-listening trip back to where it all began.
Free Association: Talented for sure, but he’s lost some punchiness he had as a youth.
For Fans Of: Beck x Ben Kweller + Wilco, a midwestern/more talented Jack Johnson.
Girls
Father, Son, Holy Ghost
(True Panther/Matador)
Sounds Like: The S.F. duo of JR White and Chris Owens killed it on their druggy, ethereal debut, Album; here’s their nuanced, less annoying sophomore.
Free Association: Owens was a Child of God, so he’s bursting with catch-up creativity.
For Fans Of: Spiritualized/Holy Shit!, Ariel Pink x Surfer Blood, productive hippies.

“I've seen Milagres live a few times, and have always been impressed. A quick correction, though: Glowing Mouth isn't Milagres' debut album. (They released an EP and LP under their previous band name, The Secret Life of Sofia.) That's why they sound mature!”
