The Pack A.D.
Unpersons
(Mint)
Sounds Like: Vancouver duo of garage ladypunks’ stellar tits-to-the-wall blues rock just gets better and better as they ease up on pop and double down on thrash snarl.
Free Association: Only Marnie Stern and Alison Mosshart can keep up with these two.
For Fans Of: Sleater-Kinney + Black Keys, Japandroids, turning attitude into art.
Milagres
Glowing Mouth
(Kill Rock Stars)
Sounds Like: The Brooklyn, N.Y., quintet’s debut is astounding in its maturity and beauty; Kyle Wilson’s lead singing is gorgeous and the moody, haunting grooves will hook you.
Free Association: Their late-September Kung Fu Necktie date should not be missed; it’ll be killer.
For Fans Of: Wild Beasts x Arcade Fire, sad Beck, slow burn spaceouts, buzz bands.
Mellowhype
Blackenedwhite
(Fat Possum)
Sounds Like: The L.A. duo of Hodgy Beats and Left Brain (Odd Future freaks) turn it out on their second, a smartly- produced, sick collection of mildly disturbing ghetto swag.
Free Association: Their L.A. feels like Dre & Snoop’s: pimp, hazy and straight-up scary.
For Fans Of: Earl Sweatshirt, ballin’ skateboarding punk-ass rhyme-slingers.
Jay-Z and Kanye West

“I've seen Milagres live a few times, and have always been impressed. A quick correction, though: Glowing Mouth isn't Milagres' debut album. (They released an EP and LP under their previous band name, The Secret Life of Sofia.) That's why they sound mature!”
