Pink Skull

By now we should all know Pink Skull, the Philly DJ/production team that's become a fully functioning live band to boot. If by some fluke you don't, start with last spring's boldly titled Zeppelin 3, a glorious dance record smearing glittery glam and hypnotic krautrock over a busy, bumping strain of psychedelic disco.
Even devoted wallflowers will marvel at the gravitational pull of the opening "Gonzo's Cointreau" with its club-ready funk tinges and blown-out oscillations.
And that's not even touching on the extras. Philly indie-pop expat Mirah turns up on the chill closer "Take Me Out Riding," and the Pink Skull remixes of Icy Demons' "1850" and Plastic Little's "Crambodia" (featuring Spank Rock, Amanda Blank and Ghostface Killah) are included for good measure.
As a live band Pink Skull is core members Julian Grefe (best known as Julian S Process, after the defunct local band he was in) and Justin Geller plus the guitar/bass/drums foundation of Sam Murphy, Mike Hammel and Jeremy Gewertz, respectively. This incarnation now plays out as often as Pink Skull the DJ duo who are gearing up to bowl over Canada's diverse Pop Montreal festival.
Before that, though, is a full-band appearance at Funrazor, a night of music, film, raffles and auctions hosted by local art-centered nonprofit Nexus/Foundation for Today's Art. For Pink Skull, who originally gelled in part due to Chinatown art collective Space 1026, it's as sweet a hometown gig as could come along.
