... COSMO BAKER
Age: 31
Hometown: Philadelphia.
Award tour: "It feels great. I've been doing what I do for a long time. It's really only been the past several years that I've been getting a lot of global recognition. It's almost a shift in generations, with people more attuned to things now. As compared to 10 years ago, hip-hop and hip-hop-based music is pop music to a degree. You're gonna have a bigger market for it and people willing to spend money on bringing in somebody who's gonna play something other than trance.
On Philly love: "It's in my blood. Growing up in Philly can be so tough. Our town is a hardass town, and you've really got to work extra hard to make anything out of yourself. It's especially hard to make it as an artist out of Philly. I've always said a Philadelphia crowd is the toughest crowd anywhere. You have to get really good really fast or else you're not gonna make it."
Tastemaking: "My thing has always been to unconsciously try to draw parallel lines between sounds and genres--to draw the musical comparisons, and make it natural. It's just something I do. I've never really thought I have a responsibility to 'school these cats'--it's just one of the things I've done, and one of the things that's become one of my signature sounds. It's extremely important. Not to sound cliched, but if you don't know your past, you don't know your future."
LOVE Park: "I feel really fortunate that I've been able to do what I do with the support and the love that I've gotten from Philly for so many years. I'm always gonna be from Philly no matter what, so I'm gonna rep it until the day I die."
