From their development of proto-sequencers to their embrace of the Mellotron and Moog synthesizer, Germany’s Tangerine Dream is closely associated not only with the development of krautrock, but electronic music as a whole—ambient, dance, trance and everything in between. In their 43-year career, they have never had a top hit, or even an earworm to speak of, but can count scores of film soundtracks (including Risky Business), legions of fans, and a U.K.-charting atmospheric instrumental album among their achievements. While they’ve moved from the edgy and atonal minimalism of their early albums to trippy new age-y synthesizer jams, Tangerine Dream has retained a devotion to beauty and mystery, writing surrealist soundscapes for secret abandoned gardens and infinitesimal universes.
