For Fans Of: Xiu Xiu + Antony and the Johnsons, marriage equality, high gay art.

Geron Hoy

Lunatic

(Self-released)

Sounds Like: The Philadelphian’s newest without a label is a 10-track bundle of singer-songwritery tracks filled out with more instruments and plaintive, sad vocals.

Free Association: Methinks he used to love that song “Walking in Memphis” a lot.

For Fans Of: High-pitched Neil Young, Burce Hornsby + Five For Fighting, local love.

Estelle

All of Me

(Atlantic)

Sounds Like: The U.K.-raised R&B princess’ third is a strong-but-not-brilliant collection of her signature blend of doo-wop, hip-hop, reggae, funk and old-school soul.

Free Association: She’s been listenin’ to Miseducation of Lauryn Hill a lot. Could be worse.

For Fans Of: Jill Scott/Jazmine Sullivan/Erykah Badu/Missy, mates and tea.

Chiddy Bang

Breakfast

(Virgin)

Sounds Like: The excellent high-energy/party-flavored major label debut from Philly’s own duo of emcee “Proto” Anamege and Noah (Xaphoon Jones) on the decks.
