Sounds Like: The French duo’s powerfully successful formula of skronky electronic dance music is catchy and popular with the kids. Thank goodness they’re maturing a bit.

Free Association: No “D.A.N.C.E.” here, much less radio-friendly; that’s a good thing.

Sounds Like: Quirky-to-the-max trio of Queens dudes making jangly, low-fi weirdo rock with simplicity and rough polish.

The Barr Brothers

(Secret City)

Sounds Like: Brothers (ex-the Slip) plus a lady on dulcimer and a guy on vibraphone create folk that’s gorgeous and vaguely African in its rhythms and spirit.

Free Association: Listen, the Slip’s a great band, despite their jam band flirtations.

For Fans Of: Bon Iver x the Dodos, Fleet Foxes, delicious white people folk.
