The Extremist
The machine-led violence of modern capitalism—against both body and spirit—necessitated the birth of an equally violent music that harnessed those destructive powers for transgressive purposes. In 1970s England, bands like Throbbing Gristle merged harsh electronics, punk and avant-garde disregard to craft brutally noisy music that sounded like a million jackhammers leveling a factory. The anger spread to Germany—cf. Einstürzende Neubauten—where Tesco Records launched in 1987 to elevate the nation’s scene, mutating it into power electronics/power noise. The wrath spread in 2001 when Tesco launched a U.S. label to advance the Yanks’ post-industrial clique, and tonight’s festival celebrates the anniversary. Headliners KE/HIL, a German duo grinding for more than 25 years, detonate piercing flash bombs of skronk and New York’s Yellow Tears propel noise grenades into the post-apocalyptic Nothing. Philadelphia’s secret weapons Jonathan Canady and James Plotkin represent the new U.S. generation of metal-infused, mildly ambient, post-everything industrial demolition men.
Sat., Nov. 12, 9pm. $10-12. With KE/HIL, Yellow Tears, Jonathan Canady, James Plotkin + the Extremist. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave. 215.739.9684. johnnybrendas.com

“My god PLEASE fix that photo. They look like a Pearl Jam cover band. What a travesty. Ha ha.
Here's a whole set of Yellow Tears pics that would be MUCH better: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wierd/sets/72157616228633267/with/3409810377/”

“Haha, figures. Not to mention anybody that considers Plotkin "secret" must have been hiding under a rock for the last 20 years. That guy's been omnipresent in music for as long as I can remember.”
