American Philosophical Society Museum

Media Title

Find the rare and the curious.  Make creative connections between art and science. Or simply brush up on your history.  Come explore our interdisciplinary exhibitions and encounter treasures,  like the journals of Lewis and Clark, a diagram for the world’s first computer, or even a contemporary artistic  project.  What’s philosophical about us?  When Ben Franklin and his friends established the American Philosophical Society (APS), they studied the natural world and called themselves “natural philosophers.”  Now we’d call them scientists.  But the word “philosophical”stuck.  Exhibition opening May 17:  Through the Looking Lens: Cornelius Varley’s Wondrous Images of Art and Science, 1800-1860.
