Eat It in Terror!
If you think squid ink, veal kidney, beef heart and lamb tongue are some of the most frightening foodstuffs on the planet, this Halloween special is not for you. Ansill will serve a $15 three-course prix-fixe menu on Tues., Oct. 30 (Mischief Night), and Wed., Oct. 31 (Halloween) involving all the above. If you should find yourself unable to stomach the adventurous menu, there's also a pumpkin-carving contest from 7 to 9 p.m. You get a free pumpkin and a glass of wine or beer to enhance your artistic skills. The best pumpkin wins dinner for two; second place gets a complimentary bottle of Prosecco. If your pumpkins look anything like mine, you'll probably end up buying your own dinner and wine, but it's still worth a shot. >> Tues., Oct. 30 and Wed., Oct. 31, 5:30-10pm. $15. Ansill, 627 Third St. 215.627.2485. www.ansillfoodandwine.com
Eat It for the Dead!
Hate Halloween? Try celebrating the way more macabre Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. Head over to Xochitl in Headhouse Square for a four-course prix-fixe menu for $35. The menu includes a pozole soup, a trio of tamales, chicken in black mol and roasted pumpkin with cinnamon. For an extra $20 you can have drinks paired with each course. The special menu will be available Oct. 30 through Nov. 4. >> Xochitl, 408 S. Second St. 215.238.7280. www.xochitlphilly.com
Eat Somewhere Else for Joy!
Buca di Beppo, the offensive Italian chain on South 15th Street, is closing once a new tenant for the building is found. We say good riddance! If there's one thing this town needs less than another Italian BYOB is another crappy chain. Of course considering the space is owned by the Philadelphia Parking Authority, another crappy chain will no doubt sidle up to take its place.
Preview It!
The New Deck Tavern posse spreads its wings even farther east with the opening of Slinte, the new Irish pub conveniently located across from 30th Street Station. While it's still on the University City side of the Schuylkill, it's perfectly located for those stuck at the train station. Hunker down at the handsome wood bar to throw back a Guinness or shovel down a bowlful of cheddar dip prepared with Harp. They're also open for lunch (should you find yourself in the neighborhood) and have karaoke (should you find yourself in the mood). >> Slinte, 3000 Market St. 215.222.7400. www.newdecktavern.com
