Eat It Near South Street!

The South Street Headhouse District is hosting the third annual Eight Days of Eats restaurant promotion, offering $30 dining specials at participating restaurants in the South Street area. Here's your chance to check out newer spots like cozy Mexican boite Las Bugambilias and notable places like Xochitl and Zot as well as a pack of others (all listed on the website). If you'd rather jam all of your tasting adventures into one night, head to the Eight Days of Eats Kickoff Event on Tues., April 29 from 7 to 9 p.m., held in the Headhouse Shambles. All participating restaurants will serve tasting portions of their cuisine. While the event is technically free, to sample the food you'll need a wristband and tickets. A $10 donation to the Historic Trust Conservancy, the organization that keeps Headhouse looking smart, gets you the ticket and wristband. You'll also need that wristband to access the complimentary beers from Philadelphia Brewing Company. >> Tues., April 29, 7-9pm. $10. Headhouse Square, Second and South sts. www.southstreet.com

Compete in It!

Are your chili skills up to snuff? Good enough to best all other amateur chili-makers in Center City? Perhaps you're bold enough to enter your first-rate chili in the Center City Residents' Association Chili Challenge. The event, which is also a potluck supper, is open to CCRA members and the general public. In addition to the votes of attendees, the Chili Challenge will be judged by a panel of foodie professionals including Audrey Claire Taichman of Audrey Claire and Twenty Manning, Marigold Kitchen chef Erin O'Shea, and Liz Sgroi, senior food editor of Quick & Simple magazine. If you're not brave enough to enter the chili fray, you should still potluck. Visit the website for details on what to bring and how to bring it. To enter the Chili Challenge, entrants must email their name and the name of the chili recipe to dewitt.brown@gmail.com. >> Wed., April 30, 6-8:30pm. $5 (children free). Philadelphia Ethical Society, 1906 Rittenhouse Sq. 215.546.6719. www.centercityresidents.org
