Read It Before You Drink It!

So many breweries, so many beers, so little time. The one downside of Philly's burgeoning beer scene is the near impossibility of navigating it. Beer writer and Daily News columnist Don Russell, aka Joe Sixpack, has done the work for you with his new book Joe Sixpack's Philly Beer Guide: A Reporter's Notes on the Best Beer-Drinking City in America. Just in time for Philly Beer Week, Russell has the inside scoop on the city of brotherly suds, from the breweries to the brewpubs to the beer itself. A chapter we're very glad he included: "Excuses to Drink." Not that we really needed any. >> www.caminobooks.com

Drink It Whether It's Wine or Beer!

It's an eternal debate: beer or wine? The answer is simple: beer and wine. This gives you the perfect excuse to "research" them both. We're betting Sam Calagione and Marnie Old did loads of research for their new book He Said Beer, She Said Wine, due out in April. As part of Philly Beer Week Calagione (founder of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery) and Old (a local wine educator and consultant) are hosting a He Said Beer, She Said Wine dinner and competition at XIX restaurant on Thurs., March 13. There'll be five courses from chef Marc Plesses paired with five beers and five wines selected by Old and Calagione. As a guest, you'll be voting on which combinations work best, with the winning drink announced at the end of the evening. As we all know, with beer and wine, everyone's a winner. Reservations required. >> Thurs., March 13, 6pm. $95. XIX, Park Hyatt at the Bellevue, 19th fl., Broad and Walnut sts. 215.790.1919. www.nineteenrestaurant.com

Drink It and Shop!

Drinking before shopping is a dangerous game-- trust us, we've done it and have the credit card bills to prove it. Drinking while shopping, now that seems like utter madness. But Rum Bar is throwing caution to the wind to host Shop • Rum • Roll, a neighborhood shopping and drinking event. If you stop by Rum Bar Thurs., Feb. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m., you'll be treated to samples of rum and snacks and a trunk show from "movable boutique" Rack and Roll Clothing Co. Other neighborhood shops like Kusheik Boutique, Optique and Deborah Finn's Rittenhouse Jewelry will also be participating, inviting the public to check out a different featured designer at each location, plus serving snacks from Seafood Unlimited and drinks of their own. >> Thurs., Feb. 28, 6-9pm. Free. Rum Bar, 2005 Walnut St. 215.751.0404. www.rum-bar.com
