Mix-a-Six der Marzen Style
This month, I've made selections for the best Oktoberfest-style beers from both here and abroad.
Victory FestBier
5.6 percent abv
If you're going to stray from Teutonic terrain, this is your best bet. Representing traditional mrzen style, Downingtown's lager is laden with toasted caramel malt and German hops. Medium-bodied and smooth as an Audi S4. $2.50
Breckenridge Autumn Ale
6.7 percent abv
Autumn means trading in lawn mower beers for post-raking pints, though this isn't an Oktoberfest but technically an Old Ale. This Colorado brew has a radiant mahogany color reminiscent of root beer. Bavarian Hops provide a light bitterness, but sweet dominates as notes of molasses linger. $2.65
Ayinger Oktoberfest-Mrzen
5.6 percent abv
Although not from Munich, this is one of the more authentic Oktoberfests. It pours a beautiful amber hue, and is medium- to full-bodied with notes of caramel malt and spice. Mmm. Since there'll be no dirndl for me this year, this is my Oktoberfest. $4.10 (16.9 oz)
Stoudts Oktoberfest
5.0 percent abv
Carol Stoudt, the matriarch of craft brewing, brings us another toasty treat. Hers has a bit more hop notes than their local aforementioned competitor. Sing German songs you don't know the words to with the whole Stoudts clan during their Oktoberfest celebration the last weekend in September. $2.10
