xLAB: Designing New Entertainment Experiences

Media Title

Sleek smartphones, snap-apart tablet computers and state-of-the-art video games only skim the surface of what today’s technology has to offer, and the next wave of innovative interactive entertainment is actually much more accessible than we realize. Through a collaboration between UPenn’s School of Design and School of Engineering and Applied Science comes Penn Science Cafe, a free public lecture series that attempts to take scholarship from the classrooms and directly to an interested public, creating opportunities for open discussion and exchange of ideas.

The newly formed Experience Design and Technology Lab—or xLAB for short—began when students met to develop methods for technology to interact with its users in completely new ways. Whether via an intelligent yoga mat that knows when to pause a program until its user is in the correct position, a vest that enables movie watchers to actually feel what’s going on in their favorite film or children’s programming that interacts with a child’s toy as it’s played with, this ingenious hands-on think tank is bringing us the cutting edge of consumer technology—and working to improve upon it, right before our eyes. Tonight’s xLAB presenters—PennDesign’s Orkan Telhan, Sarah Rottenberg and Carla Diana, with Rahul Mangharam of Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Science—will be on hand for Q&As after each demonstration. // KENNEDY ALLEN
