Big men in tutus may not be the most appetizing sight, but this visual dichotomy has surprising appeal when the guys performing are the famous gender-bending “mallerinas” featured in the gloriously witty dance company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carol, which brings its act to Philly this week. Known by their fans as the Trocks, the secret to the company’s success is that the professional male dancers, despite exaggerating the foibles of classical and contemporary ballet in their delightful parody, are actually terrific dancers. The performance includes three of the biggest hits from the troupe’s 34-year history, opening with the company’s clever take on Act II of Tchaikovsky’s classic Swan Lake followed by their ode to George Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco titled Go For Barocco. The performance concludes with an excerpt from the final act of the 1939 work Laurencia, which gives the guys a chance to show their versatility in this legendary piece from Russia that blends classical and folk dance. -J.
