A brazen intellectual comedy filled with broad humor and big ideas, The Exit Interview focuses on the long-standing conflict between science and religion, represented by a pious school administrator and an existentialist professor who is being dismissed due to budget cuts. As the professor endures an excruciating exit interview conducted by the droll and devout administrator, a gunman rampages across the campus. Instead of presenting plays that comfortably reinforce the liberal worldview held by most theatergoers, InterAct Theater Company has defied the odds by producing plays that challenge audiences to reconsider their most deeply held beliefs. The fact that the company has survived for a quarter century is a testament not only to InterAct’s artistic integrity and determination, but also to Philadelphia theatergoers who believe in theater’s ability to effect social change one individual at a time. -J.
