Suburban Motel

Media Title

B. Someday Productions mounts its largest show to date with the six-cycle Suburban Motel—this week features Canadian playwright George F. Walker’s two plays, Featuring Loretta and End of Civilization. Walker may be the best Canadian playwright you’ve never heard of. Focusing on rugged blue-collar workers trying to make their way in a patently unfair world, both plays are set in a dingy motel room. Loretta concerns an aspiring pornographer whose attempts to hire a local beauty are complicated by her boyfriend, who can’t decide whether he wants to protect his beloved or star alongside her. In Civilization, Walker explores the realities faced by an unemployed man living in a cheap motel with his wife. He’s actively seeking work, but every factory he applies to has the nasty habit of suddenly being reduced to smithereens. The cops suspect a bomber is on the loose and two detectives are charged with deciding if our hero is guilty or (like so many unemployed Americans) is a victim of circumstances beyond his control.  -J. Cooper Robb
