PJFF CineMondays Presents Centerpiece: IDA

From acclaimed director Pawel Pawlikowski comes IDA, a moving and intimate portrait of a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland. On the verge of taking her vows, she is directed by the Mother Superior (Halina Skoczynska) to first meet with her sole living relative. A sheltered and naive orphan raised in a convent, Anna (stunning newcomer Agata Trzebuchowska) soon meets her Aunt Wanda (Agata Kulesza), a cynical Communist Party insider, who delivers the shocking news that Anna’s real name is Ida, and she is Jewish.

Pawlikowski returns to his native Poland for the first time as a director to confront one of the more contentious issues in Poland’s history. Powerfully written and impeccably photographed in luminous monochrome, IDA is a heartfelt and masterful evocation of a defining moment in time.
