Heroes old and new from Louisville, Ky.’s storied post-rock/post-hardcore scene come together in the just-formed combo Old Baby. At the core of the noisy, arty psych-rock quartet are Todd Cook—who played bass in the Shipping News, the For Carnation, and the reunited Slint—and singer-guitarist Evan Patterson, who fronts the excellent post-hardcore trio Young Widows. Old Baby’s debut EP, Misunderstanding Human Behavior, is coming out at the end of the month. We’ve heard one track so far, “Pale as Man,” and it lives up to the band’s pedigree—a dark, tension-filled burner inside which Patterson’s grave baritone gets shoved around by the grimy, dynamic rhythm section and sucker-punched by wah-ed out, resin-caked guitar riffs. From the sound of it, Old Baby deserves a warm Philly welcome tonight for just their third date outside of Louisville. -Michael Alan Goldberg
