“We grew up being the punchline in jokes. Now we are owning the stage,” says lesbian comic Marga Gomez, who makes her first appearance in Philly in 20 years with the one-night-only performance of Mike Albo and Marga Gomez Make Queer Comedy. Two of the nation’s most popular comics, Gomez is a stand-up comedienne and playwright, while Albo is a witty writer/performer who specializes in sketch comedy featuring a host of original and memorable characters. Perhaps best known for his critiques on our consumer culture, Albo’s most memorable character is The Underminer, a sweet guy with an unfortunate habit of making others feel suicidal. Gomez says she’ll be commenting on the election and will “attempt in 10 minutes to re-enact characters from my nine solo shows, including my showgirl mom, my Cuban dad, the great actress Kathleen Turner, Venus De Milo and Queen Latifah being attacked by a jellyfish.” Following the performance, patrons can partake in Mix n’ Match, a networking and speed dating event that gives audience members a chance to expand their professional contacts or their date book. -J.
