Magnet Magazine Turns 21

Media Title

Eric T. Miller was a 21-year-old Temple journalism student when he started Magnet with a handful of folks who had a solid nine or 10 years on him. Most have since married and babied up, but Miller’s been continuously at the helm since its first issue in the summer of ‘93. They may not have known at the time that they’d go on to become one of the nation’s most respected alt-monthly music mags (alongside Mojo, Paste, Uncut, Rolling Stone and Spin), but they’ve always and lovingly called Philadelphia home. Magnet’s never really focused on the Philly scene, but they’ve benefitted from and watched an evolving city become a destination for bands, tours and New York City expats alike.

“I feel very connected to this city, and I’ve always said that part of the Magnet story is the fact that it’s a Philadelphia story,” Miller tells PW. “I love this city. It’s my favorite city in the world. And I like the fact that people know that Magnet’s from Philly.”

Its first handful of covers captured Urge Overkill, Julia Hatfield, Afghan Whigs, Pavement, Sebadoh, Jesus Lizard, and, aptly, the headlining guests of Magnet’s 21st birthday party Thursday night: Guided by Voices. Tom Waits doesn’t do much press, and Magnet’s put him on their cover twice. “You plan and plan and plan, and sometimes things go your way and you get lucky,” Miller says. And it was Waits’ endorsement that encouraged Jim Jarmusch to do some rare interviews. “I wanted to do it because Tom Waits said you Magnet guys are cool,” Jarmusch told the assigned writer—which might just be the highest praise a magazine can get.

The lineup that the ‘zine’s put together for their birthday soiree is brick solid: GBV headline, with sickening support from Titus Andronicus and Surfer Blood. Help ‘em blow out the candles in celebration of one of Philadelphia’s points of pride: a magazine that’s aged gracefully and covered rock music dutifully and stylishly for 21 years. Here’s to 21 more. // BILL CHENEVERT
