Made In Philly

Media Title

More than two years ago, when Jay Z and Mayor Nutter announced that Budweiser would help them throw a massive concert on the Parkway, the knee-jerk reactions blasted off like sparklers on Labor Day: screams of injustice, of misusing one of our city’s treasured public spaces. Then, the lineups that were announced for the first two summers at least threw a bone to a few Philly acts. But from the looks of 2014, localizing Made in America’s becoming less and less of a priority.

Whatevs. For the second year in a row, World Cafe Live is doing its part to showcase home-grown talent as a foil to the EDM molly-fueled superfest happening two days later and a mile or so northeast. Aaron Camper, GoGo Morrow, Just Beano and Asia Sparks are but a few of the names on the roster’s long list of artists; there’s also a slew of DJs and supporting cats to flesh out a full-ass night of entertainment that’s all and only Philly. The specials will be on Yuengling and cap out at probably $5—a far cry from the $12 cans of Bud Light on deck at MIA.

Philly’s music scene runs way deeper than what passes through and what venues can sell out. There are droves of up-and-coming singers, songwriters, rappers and producers out there grinding away at product or personas, and some worry that festivals like MIA work against the little fellas just trying to get booked. Mini-fests like MIP—and the following night’s PhillyMade party at the TLA—are earnest attempts to make lemonade from lemons and show Philadelphians and visitors alike that you probably shouldn’t come drop a corporate super-concert in our city limits and not expect the army of hometown creatives to sit by idly. No: We will spit, sing, and spin your ass off.  // BILL CHENEVERT
