Les Miserables

Media Title

When it comes to big-budget musicals, nothing matches the global popularity of Les Miserables. Already seen by close to 60 million theatergoers, the legendary musical returns to Philadelphia just a few days after the debut of the long-awaited film version (which opened Christmas Day in a groundbreaking cinematic treatment starring the delectable Hugh Jackman). And if a double-shot of the musical on both the stage and screen weren’t enough to drive the show’s fans into a near-orgasmic frenzy, the tour that touches down at the Academy of Music is celebrating the show’s 25th anniversary with new staging and what it describes as “spectacular reimagined scenery.” Adapted from Victor Hugo’s epic story of obsession, passion and redemption, the new scenic design incorporates projections inspired by Hugo’s own drawings and paintings. The one thing that hasn’t changed about Les Miz is its glorious score. At one moment lifting our spirits and the next causing us to weep in recognition of a love unfulfilled, the music is a thrilling mix of rousing anthems “Do You Hear the People Sing?” and “One Day More” and breathtakingly beautiful ballads like “I Dreamed a Dream.” -J. Cooper Robb
