LTextile: A Survey of New Textiles from Lithuania

"LTextile" brings together the work of artists and designers from Lithuania in a survey of contemporary textiles, co-organized by PAA Curator Sarah Archer and Egle Ganda Bagdoniene, Vice-Rector at the Academy of Arts in Vilnius. "LTextile" is made possible by the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.     This Baltic Sea nation has a centuries-old textile tradition of producing vibrant, polychromatic fabric for clothing and household use, with earliest work based on abstractions of geometric patterns found in nature.  In modern times, during Soviet Union occupation 1940-1990, the severe restriction of artistic themes only served to strengthen the technical capacity and innate proclivity towards symbolic expression.  Since Lithuania's independence in 1991, artists have the freedom to draw upon their own cultural patrimony and traditional motifs as well as a global visual vocabulary, mixing media as well as concepts varying vastly in scope, from idyllic rural mythology to the ethereal and urbane.  Witness provocative works such as Vita Geluniene’s "The Hunt of the Unicorn” or Baltos Kandys' collaborative “Feast,” a life-size felted wool sculpture that recreates a bountiful table set for a meal.  This exhibition will introduce visitors to the work of eight contemporary and international award-winning artists who simultaneously honor Lithuanian textile history and define the fabric of a new future: Laima Oržekaukienė, Vita Gelūnienė, Eglė Ganda Boganienė, Jūratė Petruškevičienė, Jurga Šarapova, Monika Žaltauskaitė-Grašiene, Žydrė Ridulytė, and Severija Inčirauskaitė.
